All About the IC Data Sheet


The semiconductor revolution has taken the world by storm. Now there are silicon chips in almost anything ranging from a small remote controlled car to an Industrial automation system. They are the mainstay for this technological revolution and have reduced the size of electronic equipment by a huge margin. As the number of applications in which chips are used increases, so does the demand for new chips.

Each chip or IC (Integrated Circuit) has a specific purpose like it may an amplifier, a latch, a microprocessor, logic gate IC, driver IC etc. Each chip has a different internal circuitry specifically designed to make it work in a desired fashion. Each chip has a number of pins ranging from 6 to even 64 or even more for high capacity processors.

An IC datasheet is document for a specific chip providing all the necessary information which is required to use the chip in the correct manner. It has all the correct voltage and current ranges at which the IC works. It provides a well defined list of all the pins on an IC clearly stating the function of each pin. All the optimum current and voltage ranges for the IC are specified in the IC datasheet.

Any person whether a student, an engineer, an electronic equipment manufacturer or a research scientist has to refer to the IC datasheet in order to use a particular chip. It is very important that when a chip is used, a correct voltage source with an accurate value should be used. If the values on the datasheet are not considered then the IC may not function properly or it may get burnt out due to overvoltage.

An IC may have a number of variants. For example, a logic gate IC functions in the similar manner but may have different speeds and power consumption. It may be a high speed IC or a low power Schottky IC. Each different variant has a separate datasheet and care must be taken to use the correct datasheet.

As the IC datasheet contains a lot of detailed technical information, it has to be written by a person who is directly involved in the IC manufacturing process. A datasheet as already stated is a detailed log of the following details:
  1. Voltage rating
  2. Current rating
  3. Timing diagram
  4. Pin definition
  5. Power consumption
  6. Types of circuits in which it can be used

Thus these datasheets are in almost all cases written by a person who is a member of the team that has manufactured the IC.

Manufacturers always place datasheets for all their ICs on their websites and anybody can download it for free. If you buy a large quantity of the same chip then you might even get a hard copy of the same IC. Any chip that is sold worldwide has only one datasheet that is distributed all over the world. All the chips perform in exactly similar manner as stated in those datasheets.
